Advice for young people – Richard Branson
‘This may not be legally orientated, however, I thought that the meaning behind this applied to any student regardless of their dreams.’
“Find one person younger than you were when you started, and offer them non-monetary support to help them find success.” I love this #ChallengeRichard that came in via Twitter. It epitomises the spirit of business and my belief that you’re never too young to be an entrepreneur.
I recently received the wonderful letter below from nine-year-old Annie Spicer-Jones of Kent. Accompanying her letter, Annie sent me some designs of an aircraft that she invented. I thought I’d address the #ChallengeRichard by replying to Annie with some tips to help her succeed in achieving her dreams.
Dear Annie
Thank you for your letter, your creativity is inspiring. I enjoy talking to young people about their dreams. Too often children are told that they cannot do this, and they shouldn’t do that – but that just restricts their imagination. Don’t ever let anyone prevent you from dreaming. Imagination is one of our greatest gifts. Without it we would never make the changes that make the world a better place.
I love your designs for your airplane, but more importantly, I love that you [...]

How to: make yourself available for temporary work
Need work now?
If you’re looking for something that starts straight away, temporary work could be the ideal solution. And with over 20,000 recruiters looking for temporary staff on reed.co.uk right now, there’s really never been a better time to get going.
Never tried temping and want to learn more? Here’s what you need to know:
What is temporary work?
Temporary work can include anything from one day’s work, through to a year’s contract – covering a leave period, for example.
However, although temporary assignments can differ in duration, they often have one thing in common – employers are usually looking for you to start right away.
How can I let recruiters know I’m available for temporary work?
Call them, send them/us a updated version of your CV. Make sure that your CV highlights the correct skills and assets for that particular role.
Availability
Saying you’re available doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be available for every hour offered.
We will let you dictate to us exactly when you’re available, from mornings, afternoons, evenings and nights through to weekends or shift work only.
What’s more, you can easily change your availability at any time. So if you’ve found something that works for you, you simply [...]

Second interview questions and answers
So you aced the first interview… and they asked you back.
Great. You’ve made it to the second interview stage. Unfortunately, you’re not 100% how this will differ from your first interview, so your approach is simply to repeat the same things you said before, only slightly clearer and/or louder. Not so great.
While some interview preparations remain the same, there can be key differences when it comes to the types of questions asked by employers, and the answers expected of you.
We’ve put together a quick summary of how a second interview can differ from the first.
What is the difference between the first and the second interview?
Whereas a first interview is generally used to test your personality and basic abilities, the competition intensifies when it comes to the second stage.
What an employer really wants to know now is what separates you from the other candidates, what your technical abilities are, and the logistics involved when it comes to a firm offer. This way they can more easily make a direct comparison between remaining candidates.
In addition, second interviews are often an opportunity for other key members of staff at a prospective employer to meet and question a shortlist of [...]
#GiveBenAJob hashtag leads to three offers for Ben Small
Twitter appeal went viral after being launched by Ben’s stepmum Fiona.
Liverpool jobseeker Ben Small is considering offers from three potential employers after a heartwarming Twitter #givebenajob campaign to find him a job.
An appeal on behalf of Ben, from Kensington, has reached thousands of people across the world after it was launched by his stepmum Fiona Hodge using the hashtag #GiveBenAJob
Ben, 26, who has Down’s Syndrome, has struggled to find a paid job despite having an NVQ in catering and completing work experience with big chains.
His dad Mike said he had now narrowed down his search to three firms – Costa Coffee at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, family-run Wilson’s Kitchen in Old Swan and a school for young people with autism.
He said: “These three look quite promising and Fiona has sent off Ben’s CV to them. We’re really pleased.
“Obviously at the end of the day it’s Ben’s choice but at least he has a hell of a lot more options than he did before this.
“We are keeping our fingers crossed that he will have a job within the next few weeks. Ben is a good worker. He just gets on with it and he enjoys it.
“A job is what [...]
Minimum wage to rise by 20p to £6.70 per hour – the biggest since 2008
More than 1.4m low paid workers will get a pay rise of three per cent in October, when the national minimum wage will increase to £6.70 an hour.
The move, to be confirmed in the Budget tomorrow, will ensure the biggest inflation-plus increase since 2008. Inflation is currently running at 1.1 per cent. Ministers hope the generous rise will help to generate a “feelgood factor” before the May general election.
The rise, from the current £6.50 an hour, was recommended last month by the independent Low Pay Commission. But the Government has angered business by approving a 20 per cent increase in the minimum rate for apprentices, which will go up from £2.73 to £3.30 an hour. The commission had proposed only a 2.6 per cent rise to £2.80 an hour.
Minimum pay for 18 to 20-year-olds will go up by three per cent to £5.30 an hour in October, while 16 to 17-year-olds in work will get a two per cent increase to £3.87 an hour.
David Cameron said the move showed the Government is on the side of hardworking taxpayers. “It will mean more financial security for Britain’s families; and a better future for our country,” he said.
Nick Clegg, the Deputy [...]
Society puts trainee minimum salary back on agenda
Junior lawyers are to revive the campaign for a minimum salary for trainees – with the help of the Law Society.
The regulatory minimum, of £18,590 per year for training contracts based in central London and £16,650 for those outside the capital, was abolished last year. Since then, employers have been required to pay only the national minimum wage of £6.31 an hour.
Max Harris, chair of the Society’s Junior Lawyers Division (JLD), told the division’s annual dinner on Saturday that the minimum trainee salary was one of four areas where the JLD would be focusing a lot of its attention this year.
Harris said that the law is a unique sector because many trainees have to begin repaying the cost of their LPC, which averages £11,500, from the start of their training contact.
‘The national minimum wage does not take these repayments into account. This causes great difficulties from a social mobility perspective, with individuals who are unable to rely on parenting support being stifled (at least in part) from entering the profession.’
The JLD is working with Chancery Lane with a view to a recommended minimum salary being issued in July. The recommendation would not be enforceable. Instead, it would provide a [...]
